KRUG - Craftsmanship meets Philosophy

Behind every precious drop of Krug stands the dream of a visionary. One man who, long before others, understood that the essence of Champagne is pleasure. So, over 170 years ago, Joseph Krug broke with convention to follow his vision. To create the most generous expression of Champagne every year, regardless of climatic unpredictability. Joseph’s bold experiment proved a triumph and he succeeded in creating Champagne like never before. And like no other Champagne House since. To this day, the House of Krug lives and breathes his enduring philosophy, creating only prestige Champagnes since 1843.

Krug is the only firm still producing all its champagne in small oak casks, an essential element for developing Krug's intense bouquet and complex flavours. Its individuality continues with the separate conservation of each wine featured in Krug’s impressive repertoire of some 150 reserve wines. There are wines from 10 to 12 different vintages, some of which may reach up to 15 years of age. The wines are kept in small vats, allowing aromas and flavours to be preserved for long periods of time.

With long periods of maturation (6-8 years), Krug champagne continues to age gracefully after release, developing an intensely rich, nutty flavour whilst remaining remarkably fresh.

Each recreation of krug grande cuvée is unique and is a new edition of the founder’s vision. The edition number is a new way to identify the krug grande cuvée’s creation you are enjoying. As the krug journey continues new editions will be unveiled. Krug grande cuvée different editions are listed below; simply click on your bottle of choice to find out more.

Krug`s finest champagne is Clos du Mesnil, a 100%-Chardonnay based champagne that comes from a small walled vineyard at Le Mesnil-sur-Oger. It is one of the world`s greatest Blanc de Blanc champagnes.

Depending on the talents and intuitions of a precious few, Krug's obsessive approach to details is the key characteristic of its savoir-faire which is based on three principles:
- the individual selection of the plots and the careful following of each wine,
- the art of blending and the creation of Champagnes by Krug’s Chef de Caves Eric Lebel and the Tasting Committee,
- the essential mastering of time, stretched to an unfashionably slow pace.
