En-Primeur 2016

Our team spent the first week of April tasting a comprehensive cross-section of barrel samples from the 2016 vintage and returned to Hong Kong with glowing reports of the quality on offer from this year. There were some stand-outs, with the wines of the northern Medoc being particularly successful and there are pockets of excellence to be found on the right bank and elsewhere. Many producers seem to have dialled back on their quest for ultra-ripeness and exposure to oak so that these wines often display a more classic style. The best wines of the Medoc call to mind a more modern style 1986, showing great depth and concentration. Over in the right bank there are suggestions of a blend of 2005 and 2010.

Weather conditions:
On the face of it the weather pattern in 2016 did not offer the ideal conditions for a classic vintage. Spring and early summer were wet, with treatments against mildew absolutely de rigeur for anyone concerned about the health of their vines. Despite the wet conditions, flowering took place successfully but from the end of June there was an extended spell of dry weather which lasted until rain on September 13 which kick-started the ripening process again. Fortunately the spring rains meant that there was enough ground water to sustain the vines through the summer drought but ripening in the period from mid-September to late October was painfully slow. Thanks to the extended dry period berries were small with thick skins and the resulting wines show fresh acidity and ripe tannins.

Vintage Characteristics: It has been suggested that Bordeaux 2015 and 2016 make a pair that can be compared with the equivalent 2009 and 2010: the first vintage in each pair showing an exuberant, hedonistic style, the second more restrained and classical. The 2016’s show lower alcohol than the 2009 and 2010 wines, in some cases a good 1% lower which brings a brighter, fresher style reminiscent of the classic vintages of the 1980’s before the quest for concentration and ripeness began in earnest.

Buying Strategy: As usual we will concentrate on the top performing properties and those we consider to offer the best value for money. There are some very successful wines in this vintage which Bordeaux lovers will not want to miss.

Tasting notes: Jancis Robinson (JR), Neal Martin (WA), James Suckling (JS), Wine Spectator (WS) and Antonio Galloni’s (AG) are indicated on the following pages.
